Building to Destroy

Battleship is imminent.  We are constructing and testing.  The day has been good.
This one works well.
We shall see.

Yellow Is The New Black

My wife jokes that when we married her dowry was two kayaks and some dewalt tools.  All the above are still accounted for and in use.  So when I have purchased tools for the classroom I always buy Dewalt because if they can handle my abuse they can handle the classroom.  We are in the midst of launcher construction and every picture I took seemed to have Dewalt Yellow in it.

Designing and Building Launchers

We have started designing and building.  Pictures speak better than words.

The view from my window.

Today I was missing a ton of kids.  Band and Orchestra students are on tour which left me with small classes.  I gave option of working on launchers, learning about Sphero, Bloxels, or other work.  It was an eclectic day of learning.

A Bobbin

Mr. Heisel our Tech Department Guru came to me and asked if I could print an enlarged bobbin for FACS to demonstrate how to thread a bobbin.  I asked a couple kids to recreate it in actual size and then enlarged it.
The design

Final print needs some sand paper but looking good.

They. Are. Makers.

There comes a time every year where I introduce a new project and there are no questions.  There is no noise.  There are are no distractions.  There is movement.  There is focus.  There are ideas.  There are conversations.  There is research.  Students have moved from this type of learning is new to this is what we do.  They have been changed.  It makes me so happy.

The assignment is to create a ping pong ball launcher to play a game of Battleship.  They will also have to explain Newton's first law of motion and potential and kinetic energy using the launcher.

Playing with Words

I gave a bunch of words that kids first did a free sort.  Most put them into moving (kinetic energy) and stationary (potential energy).  Then we sorted from lowest potential to highest kinetic.
How would you sort?

Some 3D Prints

A couple of kids from Mrs. Hansborugh's discovery class came over to ask if they could do some 3-D prints.  Here is their work.
