It's a Farmer's Life for Me!

Today was the Sphero Tractor Pull.  Our winning tractor pulled 720g.  I recorded a stop motion video for your viewing pleasure and recorded the winning pull.

Postponed the Pull

They needed more time for testing and prototyping.  We decided to postpone the pull until Monday.  I took some pics of some tests.

Water Robots

We are getting down to the wire.  We have two work days left.  There was a fair amount of soldering and packing motors.
Soldering the motor to the control cord.

Arena of Domination

During the snow day I went to get a piece of foam board for a robot arena.  Today in Discovery we built it.

Heavy Lifting

Testing was the name of the game before the big pull tomorrow.  So many designs.

What do you see?

Testing, Testing, and more Testing.  Most were in full swing collecting data and modifying their first prototypes.  Cups are a theme but in no way the majority of how kids are solving this problem.

We took over the hallway.

Lego's off to the races.

I hope they are getting something from the Smartwater sponsership.

Looking Through Windows

Kids have started construction.  Designs are become realities.  Thursday is our tractor pull.  I am always amazed at student solutions to problems.  The simplicity of some designs and the complexity of others.  It amazes me that when you look at a prototype it's like looking through a window of their thought process.

Auditors in Training

As part of second semesters Friday Project day students will answer the question "What will you make that will generate or conserve energy in your home, school, or community?"  So Dempsey and I created a form for kids to go to classrooms around the building and audit the energy use.  This will give us some data to think about as they brainstorm their solutions.

Mentors and Motors

Today we had a visitor from Boeing, Marcos Chu.  He has volunteered to help us on our construction journey.  Today was also prep the motor day.

So Dempsey and I switched rooms because my room was already set up to  learn to code Sphero.  Kids then started designing, tinkering, and in some cases construction.  In Dempsey's room there was a box of lego's in the back of the room.  It was amazing to watch kids flock to them.  Then the questions started.

"Can I make my chariot out of Lego's?"
"I love Lego's!  Can I use them?"

As you may know I have two children at the Ambrose Family center where they are using a Reggio model of learning.  I have seen their teachers use provocations.  Today I inadvertently used them.   Monday I will show some finished models.

~ Deliberate and thoughtful actions taken by adults to provoke or extend children's thinking
~ Starting points to encourage interest, involvement, creativity and thinking;
~ Something that sparks question, interest, ideas, theories, discussion  debate and engages the children's thinking
