Learning by Failure

Building continues.  Kids were in full construction mode.  I love this time during the process.  The questions "do you think this will work?".  The answers "only thing we can do is try."  There is doubt.  There is failure.  There is grit.  Problems are solved and new ones arise but through all of it there is learning.
Some packed filters.
Some stacked filters.
Some tested filters.
Some were in it for the long haul.

After the talking....

We got to work building filters.
Can I go cut down part of a tree? Yes?
Shoring up a filter basket.
A filter in action.
What is activated charcoal?
Can I use this wood?
I love the color Dewalt yellow.

Asking questions of an expert.

Today we talked to the CEO and founder of Water is Life. He graciously gave up his time to talk to us via Google Hangout about the work his company is doing.  Check out Water is Life on Twitter and Facebook.

I need an iPad mount.

Mr. Heisel asked me if I had a student who could build a Ipad mount for a tripod.  I had a tnut that fit the tripod and I showed the kids how a tnut worked.  Here is what they made.
Still needs a little sanding.
Ready to use Periscope.

Waste Problems

Today during Friday project day we started to contact experts with questions.
This group found an artist that works in the same medium that they want to work in.  (Bottle caps)
They had questions about solar panels.
Planet Natural to ask about composting.
This was waiting for me when I came in this morning.
It is an outdoor vertical garden.

Beginning

Conversation, drawings, YouTube videos, and Google were the name of the game today as students began drawing and designing their filters.
"My parents took away my phone and I was bored so I made a filter last night."
Good old YouTube
The Google
Sketches and lists
Some were already testing.
Journals are cool.  Science journals are the coolest.

Water Is Life

Today I introduced our next project.  Your students will be spending the next week building, designing, and testing a water filter.  This is part of Chemistry Learning Target 2 separating mixtures.  This project will be done in conjunction with a group of students in Ghana.  You can check them out on Twitter @lab_13ghana.  We will also be talking to Ken Suritte the CEO of Water is Life on Monday via a Google Hangout.  He is also on Twitter @WaterIsLife. Later next week students will test their filters outside.  Here are some pictures from Lab 13.  Check back in to see the progress from our students.

He Named Me Malala

Melissa Hellwig and Don Eckert got an email from Donors Choose about a grant to take kids to see the movie He Named Me Malala.  They forwarded it to the building and applied for the grant.  They won and we won.  So we went to see the movie free of charge including transportation.
Dr. Smith texted me and asked me to get a picture with the drone.
No movie is complete without snacks.
The movie was powerful.
Our next building field trip?

Choose your own adventure.

Students are exploring exo and endothermic reactions by creating their own experiment.  I put out four different salts that react with water.  They have to decide the independent variable.
What does heating the water do to the temp of the salt?
Measuring

Working on problems.

During Friday project day students are answering the question "how can I reduce waste in my home, school or community?"  Students have formed problem statements.  They are now working through what will have to be done to build their project.
A group thinking and talking about aquaponics.
Turbines! Turbines! Turbines!
Working on guiding questions.
Posting a picture to google classroom.

Thursday in Discovery

I introduced sphero and coding today in discovery.  I see a fair amount of play in our future.
Spark app on a iPad paired with a Sphero.
Mrs. Edwards needs a pattern for a quilt. We love Mrs. Edwards so we are going to make them and print them.

Some 3D Prints

A student in Dempsey's class was building a guitar and needed some knobs for his guitar.
They are for a bass so the numbers are negative because they always tell the bass player to turn down.
Olaf because Olaf is awesome.
Here is another English project.  This is from the book "The Rule of Thoughts".

Health Fair

During todays half day students participated in the Health Fair.  Community members come and set up a booth to educate kids on making healthy decisions.  Dempsey and I thought what would make the health fair even more awesome?  Thats right Drone.

It's getting hot (or cold) in here.

Exploring exo and endothermic reactions.  Students are measuring 2 grams and 4 grams of two different salts.  They are adding 30 mL of water and measuring the temperature change.
