The stations are done man!

Today we finished up stations.  Dempsey and I also began setup for a future lab.  After measurement, we talk about the scientific method and students will design their own experiment to test the growth conditions of algae.  Specifically, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.  This sample was donated by James Umen at Danforth Plant Science Center.

Everything has Mass

We will finish up stations on Monday.  Here are a couple from today.
Comparing mass and volume.
During the length station students go outside and measure whatever they want.
As part of a foundation grant Dempsey and I bought a vinyl cutter.  I wonder what kids will make?

Measuring Up

Stations continue.
We sort and then find the mass of each color of M&M's.  The data is graphed and a snack is eaten.
For the temperature station, students needed a timer.

Looking at the relationship between volume and mass.

Measurement Stations

We will be working on some measuring stations for the next several days.  I have set six different stations out where students have to use the tools of measurement that we will be using for the rest of the year.
Temperature-  students are taking the temp of hot, cold and tap water every 3 min for 12 min.
Displacement Volume- measuring the volumes of irregular objects.
Fun with volume.

Safety First

There is a great deal of talent in team Journey this year.  Here are some students posters.  We also previewed some stations that we will work through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  More on those tomorrow.
Good Job Lucy
Goggles are important.
Run the track, not the class.
The force is strong in this one.
Flesh burning acid is bad.
No horsing around.

Discovery and Lab Safety

In discover, we are still doing a variety of team building activities.
Untangling a human web.

Useing team work and lava proof boards to cross the lava.

In science we talked about lab safety and started making safety posters.

We had a bunch of house keeping items to take care of today.  Calendars, learner profile cards, grading systems, Google classroom and old fashioned name tags.
My portion of the learner profile card is left brain right brain.

They take a quiz and then score it to see where they fall.
Name tags were the name of the game.
We also joined Google classroom.

Team Building

In discover during the first couple of weeks the students participate in team building activities.

Getting to know you.....

Day two I put a bunch of questions on the projector.  Students had to interview each other.  Then report back to the class about what they found out about their partner.

I am enjoying the flexibility of recording information.  Some are using phones, some chrome books and some paper pencil.  I am so pumped for the year.

I always teach the kids how to shake hands to get to know each other.

They have to find stuff about each other after they have introduced themselves.

I like it because it gets them up out of their seats and talking to each other the first day.
