When you fail....

Here is the Journey half of Dempsey's and my jaunt into printing T-shirts.  All year we have told kids "it's time to make."  So we modeled it.

All made by hand.  It was a good day.

The sounds of sound.

Set up stations today so kids could explore sound.  I don't know if I will make it through all these stations.

Here is a sample:

Tiny Little Monsters Visited Us

So my daughter likes to go to the Schafly Farmers Market on Wednesdays.   Its a nice walk and we get to share a treat.  She also likes to visit the Monsters.  Tiny Little Monsters is a T-shirt shop in Maplewood.  7207 Manchester Rd to be exact (314-449-6900).  While looking at the shirts I struck up a conversation and asked if they would mind coming to Hixson for a demo.  Since Journey and Innovation are going to print our own t-shirts during Makerspace.  Here are some pics:

After interviewing and the Ideate step, students received feedback from their drawings and ideas.  Next up Prototyping.  Kids had 10 minutes to prototype their designs.  Here are a few of the things that they came up with......
Students could wear color coded name tags and each of the colors corresponds to common interests.

To help make friends this student thought that you should set up pen pals before school begins.  So they prototyped a computer with the we link
Another student doesn't like to wait in line for lunch.  So they made a prototype of a device that would hold your place in line until you got there.

Day one Empathy

We had a visitor on day one of Design Boot Camp.  Kids dove in to understand how their partners' thought and felt about the first day of school.

We're going to boot camp.

Mr. Dempsey and I are going to embark on a new project tomorrow.  We will take our kids through Stanford's dschool design boot camp.  Which will lead into our final project of the year.

Here is a short intro video we will show the kids.  Let's just hope we fail fast.

Pictures to follow.

You can't give them an assessment where students can move around.

During our electricity assessment I set up 7 stations.  One corresponding to each learning goal.  At each station were physical objects that students could manipulate, show and explain to me that they understood the learning goal.

We tells kids to collaborate....

shouldn't we model collaboration.  What started as ideas thrown back and forth weeks ago.  Turned into a statement that was pushed across a desk.
Which was uploaded to the cloud.  Then became......

Everyone should have a buddy that isn't afraid to fail.

I wanna make another game.

A student is making a cardboard game replica of a game that he had as a child.
